Coach Bodmer
8/2/2006
State
5A-II Champs and Parents,
Here’s
wishing you a wonderful warm-down to the summer! Please pass this info on
to incoming frosh or to others interested in trying out for the team!! Long
email...haul those calendars out.
Great
news: 2005 Season DMHS Girls
placed 19th in the nation (large public schools) in the NISCA Power
Point tabulations. Well done! Congratulations to Chelsea Lopus,
Joanna Weinstein, Emily Barton, Angela Duckworth and Whitney Lopus for their
repeat All-American performances! Congrats to Caleb Precevecz for an awesome
"off-season"!! Look for some press in the next District E-News.
Graduates,
best of luck in your freshman year at college. We’ll miss you, but keep in
touch and return to cheer us on (and time, perhaps?) at Districts!
Please
read the following items thoroughly
regarding our 2006 season and place the noted items on your calendars. We’ve
had to juggle a bit, as you’ll see:
- Tryouts
are the first week of school. ALL come
on Mandatory Monday, August 21 at
6:30 pm (we'll be there at 6 pm)
, with “GO” passes in hand (available
upon presentation of a doctor’s physical report and filled out paperwork
in the DMHS office). USS swimmers bring printouts of best times and
prepare to stay about ½ hour filling out forms, including suit sizes,
t-shirt sizes and parent email info. All others also come equipped to
start workouts that evening. Drivers: Practice concludes at 8:30 pm.
Please be prompt in picking up swimmers/divers.
- The
location is Cactus
Park Pool, for practices and home meets. The promised (and yet
incomplete) MMR pool was to be our new home, but delays have postponed the
opening until mid-November (??) Cactus Shadows will be back at
Cactus
Park
also, sharing the evening session with DMHS.
- The
tentative schedule, which was published in May and is available in the
DMHS office (blue paper), is therefore not accurate. The Wednesday AWAY
meets will stay the same, the first Wednesday HOME meet vs. Mountain
View will remain as scheduled, but the other Wednesday
HOME meets will all change to most likely Thursday (or Tuesday) of
that same week. (
Cactus
Park
has lessons on Wednesdays.) Steve Harris,
DMHS AD, and Nick Pyle,
Cactus
Park
pool manager, will be working out the new
schedule, in cooperation with
Mesa
and
Desert
Valley
personnel. I’ll update you as soon as I
am notified.
- This
change includes Districts, which is now scheduled for Tuesday, 10/10.
The Districts Meet is very
much a focal point for us this year, again. The entire team participates
and attendance is mandatory.
- Thursday,
August 24, at
5 pm
, is our Mandatory Parent Meeting,
with suit/booster payments and volunteer
signups. Have two checks ready: one for the DMHS Swim
and Dive Booster for $85 (includes District Psych outfit, three pasta
parties, bagels on bus, administrative items, end of year awards banquet,
awards, etc), and one for the team uniform (suits, caps, t-shirt.) made
out to "Swimmer's Edge." The boys' suit package will be
approximately $65, and the girls' approximately $84. This includes our
generous cap distribution that seems to clone itself.
- Friday
5:15–6:45 AM
practices are mandatory for all. On Friday,
August 25, we will be taking a team picture at
6 am
, necessary for inclusion in the glossy
football/fall sports program.
- HUGE
NOTE: Regionals
(State qualifiers) take place DURING OCTOBER
BREAK this year: October 26 (dive), October 27 and 28 (swim).
Regionals are absolutely mandatory for all of the boys and most of the girls
(selected qualifiers.) Schedule your Break accordingly.
A
big “Thank You” to those parents who have already contacted me to help run
Districts, judge meets and otherwise participate. Parents, if you have a
special category in which you would like to volunteer, email me back and
we’ll lock you in even before the parents’ meeting. Think pasta parties,
water for meets, booster positions, head timer, scorers, etc. Your kids
appreciate it. J
Below
please find the schedule "AS-IS". I will update you as soon as
I receive the home dual-meet information. Seniors, I will see
you Monday, August 14 at noon at Mountainside MS for our preseason meeting.
Again, have a jam-packed or restful end to your summer. Either way, swim into
shape for the season. USS swimmers, that means some sprint training!

Again, we'll have bagels....yes, I'll get more chocolate chip!! THANK
YOU PARENTS in advance for filling your volunteer positions. Your kids
appreciate it.
Thursday is the
Xavier/Brophy DIVE Invitational "all day".
Kim will talk with you regarding an 11-dive practice Tuesday and the early bus
on Thursday. The meet location is Paradise Valley Park,
40th Street north of Bell (it had originally been billed on DMHS schedules as
Moon Valley CC.) Kim has talked with divers and written up the dive
entries. Divers must have an 11-dive list.
Saturday is the
Xavier/Brophy Swim Invitational "all day".
The meet location is the Brophy Sports Campus on 2902 E. Campbell Ave.
The following swimmers are entered in the meet. Others are welcome
to accompany the team on the bus to cheer them on. We are limited

Selections are based on time, 2003 results, attrition, points and
strategy. DMHS is going to give Xavier a better run than they received
last year from anyone!

Very important updates!
The Horizon meet this week
has just today been changed to Tuesday from Wednesday. The team
will be excused at 1:15 (yes, 1:15), with the bus leaving at
1:30 SHARP. We must stop on the way at PV Park (40th Street north of
Bell) to drop off the divers, then continue to Roadrunner Park for the
swim meet. This is an important meet and we will have mandatory
attendance. If you must drive separately with parents due to lab
classes or urgent work, I must have a signed request to that effect
at picture day/practice Monday afternoon/evening.
Speaking of which, just a reminder
that Picture Day is this Monday, September 13. The team picture will be
taken as close to 4 pm SHARP as possible. Be there in your team suit.
Individual and buddy pictures will follow, always a crowd pleaser. Picture
envelopes were handed out Wednesday on the team bus, and extras will be
available Monday.
Either bring a sack lunch and your
homework, and hang out and study until 6:30 practice, or make arrangements to
leave and return for the regular practice time.
Zack Zimmerman and family!
Thanks for the Friday morning bagels and cream cheese. They were very
much appreciated (we even gave a couple to the lap swimmers who are squeezed
to the diving well from 5-7 am......good PR!)
8/28/2004
Our competitive season begins! The dual meet Wednesday,
9/1 is AWAY vs. Mesa. I will double-check the pool location, as they are
sometimes changed at the last minute. The bus will leave the 124th St. entrance
at 2:15 sharp. Athletes are excused from class at 2 pm. DO NOT attempt to leave
earlier. Ms. Paweski will send an email to teachers to notify them of your team
commitment. Bring drinks and attire. We hope to have team suits by this time,
but come prepared with your equipment. We will have bagels on the bus. (All our
wonderful parent volunteers should be ready for the NEXT meet, 9/8, which is
HOME.) Morgan, come with us to the meet. We need you.
I have sketched out the tentative Xavier/Brophy
Invitational (9/25) entry. Save the date! The format is the same as Regionals
the past few years; that is, we are limited to four entries per event, and the
200 free, 200 IM and 500 free have cut-off times that are reasonably
challenging: 2:05/2:25/5:40 for girls, and 1:57/2:15/5:15 for boys. Based on the
results from last year, I have put together the strongest showing point-wise
with our terrific talent. Certain swimmers on the bubble need to really step up
to make the cut-off times. Kaitlyn, Meaghan, Greta, Amanda, Jackie, Alex W.,
Katie….we are placing you in certain events in the upcoming three dual meets
with the goal of making the times…..good luck to you!! By the way, the Xavier/Brophy
Invitational takes place at the Brophy Sports Campus, with warm-ups starting at
7:30 am. (Meet start 9 am.) Our bus will leave at 6:30 am that morning. The dive
portion is Thursday, 9/23, at Moon Valley CC. A van/bus will be arranged with
Kim for that.
This season is already providing surprises in the dual
meets. Whitney, you’re a breaststroker! Torrey, you’re a sprinter! Jessica,
Heather and Sophie…you get your wishes, but you owe me! And the top three
relays in the 200 medley and 400 free are “balanced” for some fan enjoyment.
That’s on the girls’ side. The good news on the guys’ side is that we have
enough warm bodies for relays without dragging in random bystanders!! Caleb, you
don’t have to swim the 500! We will be placing our multi-talented male divers
in some relays.
The Pep Assembly at school is also Wednesday…apparently
teams will be wearing their uniforms….your Spirit Crew will be directing you
in a quick show of Swim and Dive pride. More info Monday and Tuesday.
