Go Wolves!
8/14/2007
DMHS Swim and Dive Team and Parents (Read All),
Congrats to Devon Judge! 23.3 mid-practice 50, dragging 23 pounds of canvas
shorts (and where is the suit???)
We now have 4 female and 3 male divers. Recruit some friends and they can
pick up the sport (6 dives) quickly and have some fun!
* Important Note to all desiring school transportation to practice. Bus #959
is now the official Swim and Dive Bus. It will be available daily at 3 pm at the
bus lane. You must look for it and dive in. It waits for no one, as it has a
middle school pickup at Desert Canyon to attend to after dropping you off at MMR
Pool. Take advantage of the opportunity right from the get-go, to ensure further
service. It starts tomorrow, Thursday, 8/16.
* Equipment bags are ready to be picked up in the Equipment Room from MJ. If
you have your own USS gear (fins, kickboard) use that. Otherwise, stop by and
sign out a mesh bag with gear. You are responsible for returning all items at
the end of the season. New this year: Pick up a parka at the same time. That
will save the headache of pickup later (good idea, Rahul!) Save the XL's for the
team members needing them.
* Team Roster will be announced Friday, 8/17. Practice that day will include
breakout sessions with the captains: Emily Barton and David
Russell/breaststroke, Angela Duckworth and Torrey Loper/backstroke, Sam
Weinstein and Marilyn Weiskopf/fly. Be there.
* We have an ambitious Monday, 8/20, planned. Team Pictures are scheduled for
3:30 pm sharp. Swimmers/divers mandatory practice 3:30 to 5:30, with a Captains'
Party following from 5:30 to 6:30. Parents' mandatory Meeting from 5 to 6:30 (we
have arranged A/C for that one!) Please bring volunteer spirits and checkbooks,
as you will be paying the swim suit fee (if you haven't already), the booster
fee (still TBD), and possibly the picture package, if that isn't done in
advance. Ace bandages are only necessary if we have to twist arms.
The team thanks so many already. Kari Barton is tentatively scheduling our
banquet site and has agreed to lead our wonderful Boosters. Lynn Judge will
handle your money with care as our Treasurer. Kim Duckworth tied up last year's
loose ends and delivered us to a healthy start in 2007. These and many Others
have secured their positions hosting Districts. The Olmsteads have agreed to run
our 9/11 and 10/11 barbecues. Randy Johnson retains his position as Head Timer.
Kevin and Joy Russell are already hard at work interpreting rules and assuring
our facility is prepared for our dual meets. The Mees will host two of the dual
dive meets. I will caution all newcomers now: sharpen up your elbows, as you
will be fighting for positions to volunteer. Timers, of course, are always
welcome and needed. You will have the best seats in the house for the dual
meets, and your swimmers appreciate you.
More to follow on Friday! Coach Bodmer

DIVE NOTES:The unofficial word is that PV has no divers,
therefore no dive competition. I will verify. (FYI, St. Mary's meet on
Tuesday, October 17 will definitely have NO DIVE. I have that in writing
from the coach.)
Caleb and Andrea Please
see Mrs. Oppenheim Friday (9/22) in the office, where I left the
dive entry form for Xavier/Brophy Invite. We need your 11 dives.
Information is there regarding times and specifics for Thursday, September 28.
Boys and girls will dive concurrently, unlike Chandler.
Becca, Caleb and Andrea Not officially announced
yet, but we have heard that in order to qualify for States in dive, you must
attend both Regionals (Thursday, October 26) AND the State
Qualifier Event (Friday, October 20 for girls and Saturday, October 21 for
boys...Sunrise Mountain HS. ) As happened last year, the scheduling and
notification is very late.

State
5A-II Champs and Parents,
Here’s
wishing you a wonderful warm-down to the summer! Please pass this info on
to incoming frosh or to others interested in trying out for the team!! Long
email...haul those calendars out.
Great
news: 2005 Season DMHS Girls
placed 19th in the nation (large public schools) in the NISCA Power
Point tabulations. Well done! Congratulations to Chelsea Lopus,
Joanna Weinstein, Emily Barton, Angela Duckworth and Whitney Lopus for their
repeat All-American performances! Congrats to Caleb Precevecz for an awesome
"off-season"!! Look for some press in the next District E-News.
Graduates,
best of luck in your freshman year at college. We’ll miss you, but keep in
touch and return to cheer us on (and time, perhaps?) at Districts!
Please
read the following items thoroughly
regarding our 2006 season and place the noted items on your calendars. We’ve
had to juggle a bit, as you’ll see:
- Tryouts
are the first week of school. ALL come
on Mandatory Monday, August 21 at
6:30 pm (we'll be there at 6 pm)
, with “GO” passes in hand (available
upon presentation of a doctor’s physical report and filled out paperwork
in the DMHS office). USS swimmers bring printouts of best times and
prepare to stay about ½ hour filling out forms, including suit sizes,
t-shirt sizes and parent email info. All others also come equipped to
start workouts that evening. Drivers: Practice concludes at 8:30 pm.
Please be prompt in picking up swimmers/divers.
- The
location is Cactus
Park Pool, for practices and home meets. The promised (and yet
incomplete) MMR pool was to be our new home, but delays have postponed the
opening until mid-November (??) Cactus Shadows will be back at
Cactus
Park
also, sharing the evening session with DMHS.
- The
tentative schedule, which was published in May and is available in the
DMHS office (blue paper), is therefore not accurate. The Wednesday AWAY
meets will stay the same, the first Wednesday HOME meet vs. Mountain
View will remain as scheduled, but the other Wednesday
HOME meets will all change to most likely Thursday (or Tuesday) of
that same week. (
Cactus
Park
has lessons on Wednesdays.) Steve Harris,
DMHS AD, and Nick Pyle,
Cactus
Park
pool manager, will be working out the new
schedule, in cooperation with
Mesa
and
Desert
Valley
personnel. I’ll update you as soon as I
am notified.
- This
change includes Districts, which is now scheduled for Tuesday, 10/10.
The Districts Meet is very
much a focal point for us this year, again. The entire team participates
and attendance is mandatory.
- Thursday,
August 24, at
5 pm
, is our Mandatory Parent Meeting,
with suit/booster payments and volunteer
signups. Have two checks ready: one for the DMHS Swim
and Dive Booster for $85 (includes District Psych outfit, three pasta
parties, bagels on bus, administrative items, end of year awards banquet,
awards, etc), and one for the team uniform (suits, caps, t-shirt.) made
out to "Swimmer's Edge." The boys' suit package will be
approximately $65, and the girls' approximately $84. This includes our
generous cap distribution that seems to clone itself.
- Friday
5:15–6:45 AM
practices are mandatory for all. On Friday,
August 25, we will be taking a team picture at
6 am
, necessary for inclusion in the glossy
football/fall sports program.
- HUGE
NOTE: Regionals
(State qualifiers) take place DURING OCTOBER
BREAK this year: October 26 (dive), October 27 and 28 (swim).
Regionals are absolutely mandatory for all of the boys and most of the girls
(selected qualifiers.) Schedule your Break accordingly.
A
big “Thank You” to those parents who have already contacted me to help run
Districts, judge meets and otherwise participate. Parents, if you have a
special category in which you would like to volunteer, email me back and
we’ll lock you in even before the parents’ meeting. Think pasta parties,
water for meets, booster positions, head timer, scorers, etc. Your kids
appreciate it. J
Below
please find the schedule "AS-IS". I will update you as soon as
I receive the home dual-meet information. Seniors, I will see
you Monday, August 14 at noon at Mountainside MS for our preseason meeting.
Again, have a jam-packed or restful end to your summer. Either way, swim into
shape for the season. USS swimmers, that means some sprint training!
